Brainerd recently buzzed with excitement as the community came together for the Taste of the Lakes event at the Northern Pacific Center. This lively gathering took place on March 19 and attracted food lovers from all over central Minnesota.
The annual fundraiser supports the Brainerd Family YMCA’s youth mentoring programs and offers enrichment opportunities for people of all ages. Guests enjoyed sampling dishes from a diverse lineup of local restaurants, including popular spots like Anchor North, Block North Brew Pub, and Madden’s on Gull.
Unlike previous years, there were no guest judges this time. Instead, attendees used QR codes to vote for their favorites. The winners were:
- Best Starter: A tie between Maucieri’s Italian Bistro for their Bolognese polenta bites and Grand View Lodge for tuna tartar in mini waffle cones.
- Best Entree: The Local 218, showcasing a delicious surf and turf of filet mignon and butter-poached lobster.
- Best Dessert: Madden’s on Gull, whose mini strawberry and pistachio pavlova wowed the crowd.
The overall winner? The Local 218, who took home the top accolade.
Beyond the delicious food, the evening featured beverage tastings, raffles, and a live auction. Shane Riffle, the CEO of the Brainerd Family YMCA, welcomed everyone, while KARE-11 meteorologist John Zeigler served as emcee. Logan Veo took the reins as the auctioneer, keeping things lively.
Events like Taste of the Lakes not only highlight the culinary richness of Brainerd but also help strengthen community ties. Research shows that food events increase local engagement and support. According to a survey by the National Restaurant Association, 79% of consumers believe that dining out is a good way to support the local economy.
With local businesses rallying together to support vital community programs, Taste of the Lakes serves as a delicious reminder of the power of community spirit.
