Vets in the Park: A Celebration of Service and Community
Join the fun at the fourth annual Vets in the Park event on Saturday, August 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at University Park. This family-friendly gathering honors veterans and brings together the community to show appreciation.
Organized by Love in Action, the event features lively speakers and exciting activities, all aimed at recognizing those who have served. Scott Kilde, one of the organizers, emphasizes that it’s not just for veterans. “We want everyone to come out and celebrate,” he says.
The day kicks off with a program featuring representatives from local cities, UND, and the Grand Forks Air Force Base, along with a guest female veteran. With nearly 40 vendors expected, attendees can find valuable information and resources tailored for veterans.
Food trucks will be on-site to satisfy your cravings, and kids can enjoy three bounce houses and a dunk tank. Musical entertainment will be provided by Dakota Jam throughout the event.
A highlight will be the Grand Forks Fire Department’s display, where kids can learn how to extinguish a fire using a replica house front and fire hose.
There will be prize drawings, including a 50-inch Roku TV and bikes donated by Turtle Mountain Vets in the Park, plus a variety of other fun items. Tickets for the drawing can be collected at the Love in Action table, and you must be present to win. There will also be a 50/50 raffle, which does not require attendance to win.
Proceeds from this event will go towards supporting local veterans organizations. Kilde notes the importance of this cause, especially given that North Dakota has the highest number of veterans per capita in the U.S. He emphasizes the need to assist veterans, many of whom face homelessness.
Kilde’s dedication stems from his father, Vernon Kilde, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Korean War. Despite suffering severe hardships during his service, Vernon was proud of his contributions. His experience included being part of the first-ever Honor Flight nearly 20 years ago, a trip that meant the world to him and his family. Scott recalls how his father’s stories about the trip left a lasting impression.
This year, Vets in the Park promises not only to be an event of joy and community, but also a heartfelt tribute to those who’ve served. Come out to show your support, share some smiles, and enjoy a day dedicated to honoring veterans who have selflessly given so much.
