WEST LIBERTY — This Saturday, West Liberty University will host its spring commencement ceremonies, starting at 11 a.m. in the Academic, Sports, and Recreation Complex on campus.
This ceremony is special as it will celebrate the first graduates from the university’s Doctor of Education program. Eight students will proudly receive their doctoral degrees.
Stephanie Shaw, a West Liberty alumna and current vice president at InterContinental Hotels Group, will deliver the keynote address. She will also be honored with a degree recognizing her contributions to technology and service in the global business arena.
Shaw hails from Weirton and graduated in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. She later earned a Master’s in Labor Relations from West Virginia University. Her impressive career includes high-level positions at InterContinental Hotels Group, Wendy’s, and Oracle, where she has driven significant technological advancements.
Shaw is also committed to her alma mater, currently serving on the West Liberty University Board of Governors. In 2023, she was inducted into the Alumni Wall of Honor. Her dedication to education is underscored by her philanthropic efforts, including establishing the Carole Lynn Harris Scholarship in memory of her mother.
Ryan Zumpano, a double minor in Data Analysis and Marketing, will represent the graduating students as the student speaker. Having maintained a stellar 4.0 GPA and earning the title of Elbin Scholar, Zumpano has been active in campus life, performing with the University Band and Wind Symphony, and having held significant leadership roles in student groups.
“Commencement is a significant milestone,” said West Liberty President Tim Borchers. “This class has shown resilience and leadership, and we’re excited about what they will achieve in their careers.”
As graduates prepare for the future, Shaw offered wise words: “West Liberty gave me a foundation that shaped my career and values. Stay curious, lead with integrity, and remember to give back to your communities.”
The event not only marks the end of an academic journey but also the beginning of many new paths. In today’s ever-changing world, the skills and experiences gained here could shape the future of many fields. According to a recent survey by the National Center for Education Statistics, college graduates earn significantly more than their peers without degrees, with statistics showing a median annual income increase of over $20,000.
As these graduates step into their new roles, their contributions could be vital for local and global communities alike.
