The University of Scranton is set to honor Robert S. and Marilyn A. Weiss with the President’s Medal at a gala in Manhattan on October 1. This annual event not only celebrates excellence but also supports the Presidential Scholarship Endowment Fund, which offers full-tuition scholarships to deserving students.
Bob and Marilyn first met at a campus dance in 1966, and their commitment to Scranton has been evident ever since. Their donations have significantly shaped the university; they contributed $1.25 million to create a training suite for pediatric low vision research, and $1 million to build a top-notch athletic field. The couple made headlines with a $10.5 million gift that led to the construction of Weiss Hall, a new hub for various academic and health services.
Bob S. Weiss, a dedicated alumnus from Lake Ariel, broke barriers as the first in his family to go to college. His impressive career included leadership roles at Cooper, a major healthcare company where he drove innovations that benefitted many, like the soft contact lens approved for myopia management in children. Acknowledged for his achievements, Bob received various accolades, including the “Most Admired CEO” award and remained active in corporate governance after his retirement.
Marilyn Weiss, originally from South Scranton, has also made her mark in healthcare as a nurse. Together, they support countless local charities, making substantial contributions to the community’s well-being.
At last year’s gala, University President Rev. Joseph G. Marina announced a goal of raising $7 million to fully endow the Presidential Scholarship Fund, bringing its total to $30 million. This effort emphasizes the importance of education and community support, ensuring future generations of students have opportunities to thrive.
As we look forward to this year’s event, it’s a moment to celebrate not just the Weisses but also the collective commitment to education and community service.
