The Asian University for Women (AUW) is hosting its first International Conference on Environment and Climate Action (ICECA) in Chattogram on August 1-2. This event marks a significant moment, as it’s a student-led initiative aimed at sparking dialogue around critical environmental issues.
Over 200 participants are expected, including students, researchers, and environmental experts from South Asia, the UK, and the US. The conference will examine a range of themes, including biodiversity, climate justice, and innovative green technologies.
Sonia Sultana, director of the Department of Environment in Chattogram, will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony. Mosae Selvakumar Paulraj, a member of the organizing committee, highlighted how the conference offers a chance to form partnerships and work toward a more sustainable future.
The theme, “Ami: I for a Greener World,” emphasizes the need for both personal and collective responsibility in environmental protection. Attendees can look forward to keynote speeches, panel discussions, and presentations, all aimed at finding solutions to today’s ecological challenges.
On the second day, participants will take a field trip to see sustainability efforts in action. They will visit ecological sites and community organizations to learn about local conservation practices.
Engaging with these topics is more relevant than ever. According to recent studies, over 60% of young people believe climate change is a significant threat to their future. This conference provides a crucial space for young voices to contribute to global climate discussions and explore innovative solutions.
Events like ICECA show how vital student involvement is in tackling climate change. By fostering collaboration and sharing knowledge, we can work toward a healthier planet together.
