LANGKAWI: The 18th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Environment is coming up at the Langkawi International Convention Centre from September 2 to 4. This gathering is part of Malaysia’s leadership in ASEAN for 2025 and will coincide with the 20th meeting of the ASEAN Agreement on Transboundary Haze Pollution.
More than 200 delegates are expected, coming not just from ASEAN countries but also from Timor-Leste and partners like the European Union, China, South Korea, and Japan. The goal of this meeting is to boost cooperation on environmental issues across the region.
Key topics will include policies on environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and strategies to handle climate change. One of the main outcomes expected is a Joint ASEAN Statement for the 30th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. The group aims to make tangible progress on establishing the ASEAN Centre for Climate Change, along with adopting the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan.
Interestingly, as part of its agenda, the meeting will review ASEAN’s role in UN climate talks through the ASEAN Pavilion. There’s also a proposal to create the Southeast Asia Alliance Group for global climate discussions, which shows the rising importance of collaborative climate action.
Sessions will also focus on working with dialogue partners to share technology and best practices for sustainable development. This collaborative spirit is crucial, especially as global temperatures rise and environmental challenges become more pressing.
Several engaging activities are planned, including an announcement of a major EU-funded initiative on biodiversity and climate change in ASEAN. UNICEF will also hold a session related to the upcoming ASEAN Children and Youth Climate Summit in 2025. Additionally, the 6th ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City Awards will be presented during the gala dinner, recognizing outstanding sustainability practices within the region.
Malaysia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment Sustainability (NRES) emphasizes that this meeting will focus on sustainability, aiming to reduce carbon footprints and promote responsible resource management. The hope is that this initiative will foster a more sustainable and inclusive ASEAN by 2030.
Historically, ASEAN has faced significant environmental issues, but recent collaborations have shown promise in addressing these challenges. A 2021 report noted that air pollution in Southeast Asia was responsible for over 300,000 premature deaths annually, underscoring the need for stronger regional initiatives to protect the environment.
By hosting this event, Malaysia not only highlights its own environmental achievements but also takes a vital role in shaping a sustainable future for the ASEAN community. The conversations here could lead to concrete actions that influence policies and practices for years to come.
