Helping the Community: Food Drive Success

On May 10, volunteers gathered at the Salisbury Post Office, but they weren’t sorting mail. They were sorting food. This was all part of the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, where letter carriers collected donations left at mailboxes.

The local post office worked with two food banks: Rowan Helping Ministries and the Salvation Army. Together, they made a significant impact. As of May 12, they had collected 6,480 pounds of nonperishable food, and collections were still happening. Several businesses joined the effort by hosting barrels for donations.

Audrey Eudy from the Rowan County United Way saw firsthand how important this was. "With schools closing soon, we expect to see more families needing help," she noted. In fact, last month alone, local food pantries served over 1,300 families.

Kristine Wiles, from Rowan Helping Ministries, expressed gratitude, saying the donations would help keep their pantries stocked. She emphasized that many pantries had been buying food recently, and this donation would be a “huge influx.”

One letter carrier reported a drop in donations on her route, noting she collected food from only 10 out of 650 mailboxes. “If everyone gave just one can, think of the difference,” she said.

Volunteers of all ages pitched in. Dr. Ethel Bamberg-Revis remarked, "No job was too small. I’m grateful to help others." New resident Ellery Klingyoung shared a similar sentiment, “We wanted to get involved in the community.”

Danny Damato, a long-time letter carrier, highlighted the importance of community support. He has seen people struggling, making this drive even more meaningful. "The National Postal Service encourages us to focus on community and support those we deliver to."

Kyna Grubb from Rowan Helping Ministries added, “We’re thankful for everyone involved. The food we received will help address the heightened need in our community.”

This event is more than just a food drive; it’s a reminder of the power of community. Together, we can make a difference, even one can at a time.
