Join Us in Spreading Holiday Compassion: How Your Generosity Can Help Fight Hunger This Season

Last week, we wrapped up another successful season of Making Spirits Bright, organized by the local Rotary Clubs. This event isn’t just about beautiful lights; it also serves a greater purpose. This year, we collected an astounding 117,324 pounds of food for the Sheboygan County Food Bank. Over the past 13 years, this initiative has been a beacon of hope, bringing in over 1.2 million pounds of food to help those in need.

What makes this partnership so special is the impact it has on our community. The funds raised and the food collected help us fight hunger effectively. With the ongoing support from Making Spirits Bright and their dedicated volunteers, we can make a real difference. The event also hosts our main fundraiser: the Holiday Lights Hunger Run/Walk.

On November 23, we held our seventh annual run/walk, welcoming a record 2,585 participants and raising a remarkable $109,000. This brought our total fundraising to over $429,000 in just seven years. These donations are crucial to ensuring that fresh and nutritious food reaches our neighbors in need.

The kindness of 150 volunteers and the generosity of 51 sponsors played a huge role in making this event a success. We owe a special thanks to Acuity Insurance, Making Spirits Bright, and our other sponsors who made significant contributions. Their support helps us continue our vital services.

During this busy holiday season, the compassion of our community shines bright. We see an average of around 6,000 families visiting our emergency food network each month. Our efforts also include providing meals through our growing Community Cafe and a weekend food backpack program for children.

Thank you to everyone who participated, sponsored, or volunteered. Your support is invaluable in our mission to ensure no one in Sheboygan County goes hungry.

Patrick Boyle is the executive director of the Sheboygan County Food Bank.
