A local organization in Toledo, Ohio, is facing challenges as it works to provide meals to those in need. Helping Hands of St. Louis has been serving the community for over 40 years. They offer vital resources like meals and groceries, but demand is outpacing supply.

Sue Shrewsbery, the organization’s director, shared that they’re struggling to meet the increasing need. The pantry currently assists over 5,000 people each year, handing out more than 2,000 bags of groceries, snack packs, and hygiene kits. Yet, with rising food prices and cuts to federal support, their task is becoming harder.

The SeaGate Food Bank, which supplies food to Helping Hands, faced setbacks when $655,000 worth of food orders were canceled in March. As a result, Shrewsbery reports a staggering 50% drop in the amount of food they usually receive. Essential items like milk and cheese are no longer on the list, forcing them to rely on community donations.

The need for help is significant. This past year saw a 15% increase in requests, following a 30% jump the previous year. “If we can’t improve our situation, we may have to reduce what we offer,” Shrewsbery cautioned, indicating that those in need may leave with fewer resources.

Every year, Helping Hands serves over 40,000 meals on-site and provides thousands of clothing items too. The community’s support is crucial. Many local food pantries are experiencing similar struggles, so reaching out to your local pantry can also make a difference.

Understandably, many people are concerned about food access in these times. A recent report from the Food Research & Action Center highlights how food insecurity continues to grow nationally, affecting millions. As communities come together, every effort counts in combating hunger.
