Brain Health Fair on July 15 at the REC
Mark your calendars for the free “10 Ways to Love Your Brain” Health and Wellness Fair on Tuesday, July 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Student Recreation Center. SIU nursing students and the Alzheimer’s Association are teaming up to bring this family-friendly event to life, with support from Recreational Sports and Services.
This fair is designed to promote brain health and help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Attendees can look forward to a mix of fun activities for all ages, including interactive booths, games, and a climbing wall (parental supervision is required for those under 18). The Alumni Lounge and surrounding areas will be buzzing with educational opportunities, giveaways, and vendor booths focused on health.
It’s exciting to see nursing students put their learning into action through this service project. They hope to make this fair an annual event that benefits everyone.
Free parking is available in Lot 45, just south of the Student Recreation Center across E. Grand Ave.
The activities will reflect the “10 Ways to Love Your Brain” initiative from the Alzheimer’s Association, which includes:
- Protect your head.
- Be smoke-free.
- Get moving.
- Challenge your mind.
- Control your blood pressure.
- Manage diabetes.
- Sleep well.
- Stay in school.
- Eat right.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
Supporting the fair is not just a local initiative; it reflects a growing awareness of brain health. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, around 6.7 million people aged 65 and older are living with Alzheimer’s in the U.S. today, and this number is projected to rise as our population ages. Engaging in activities that promote brain health is essential, as studies show that lifestyle choices can significantly influence cognitive decline.
