WHEELING – This year’s Easter food giveaway at Bethlehem Apostolic Church in North Wheeling is getting a big boost. The Health Plan has stepped in as the new sponsor for the event, which kicks off at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the North Wheeling Community Dream Center.
To prepare, the church is hosting a “Stuff the Bus” event from 4-6 p.m. Thursday at Riesbeck’s in Elm Grove. Volunteers will be collecting food and cash donations for the Easter giveaway.
Jeff Knight, president and CEO of The Health Plan, decided to help after learning that Bishop Darrell Cummings and his ministry had lost their main sponsor. Knight emphasized the importance of supporting Bishop Cummings and his efforts that have provided food, clothing, and hope to countless families in the Ohio Valley for over 30 years. “It’s time for the Ohio Valley to give back,” he said.
Bishop Cummings shared that Knight reached out after someone saw a news story about the church’s funding struggles. “Their support is a miracle for us this Easter,” he noted. With the financial help from The Health Plan, the church can purchase more food and supplies. Historically, these food distribution events have cost between $10,000 and $12,000.
“While this support won’t cover everything, it brings us significantly closer to our goal,” he added. “Thanks to The Health Plan, many families will get the help they need.”
Previously, Main Street Bank was the primary sponsor for nearly a decade, but they stepped away after a change in ownership last year. Cummings expressed gratitude for their past support while focusing on the immediate needs for this year’s event.
As the community gears up for the giveaway, volunteers are still needed on Saturday, and every donation counts. “This shows that people really care in the Ohio Valley,” Cummings said. “That connection makes our community special.”
Beyond local efforts, studies show food insecurity remains a pressing issue across the U.S. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, approximately 10.5% of households were food insecure at some point in 2021. Initiatives like this Easter food giveaway are vital in addressing such challenges within the community.
