This weekend, postal workers will collect non-perishable food items to help those in need. Simply leave your donations next to your mailbox on Saturday, May 10, before the mail arrives. All contributions stay local!
Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the U.S. participate in the NALC Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive, the largest one-day food drive in the country. This year, the event is on May 10.
Organized by the National Association of Letter Carriers (AFL-CIO), along with rural carriers and other volunteers, this initiative has provided over 1.82 billion pounds of food to communities over the past 30 years. Carriers collect non-perishable donations from mailboxes and post offices, delivering them to local food banks, pantries, and shelters. Nearly 1,500 branches participate across all 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands.
The United States Postal Service, the National Rural Letter Carriers’ Association, and organizations like United Way and CVS Health support this year’s Stamp Out Hunger drive. They highlight the importance of community involvement. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, around 10.5% of American households face food insecurity. Initiatives like this drive aim to alleviate that burden, making a significant impact locally.
Donating is simple. Just place a bag of non-perishable food next to your mailbox before your letter carrier comes by. They’ll handle the rest, sorting and delivering the food to those in need in your community.
Participating in this food drive not only helps pretty quickly but also connects us with our neighbors who may be struggling. By contributing, you’re joining millions helping to fight hunger in America. Let’s make a difference together!
