On Saturday, May 9, letter carriers in Streator will join the fight against hunger by collecting non-perishable food donations. This effort is part of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, which has been helping communities for over 30 years.
Residents are encouraged to leave bags of food by their mailboxes. While delivering mail, carriers will pick up these donations. If a donation is too large, they might return with a vehicle. If you prefer, you can also drop off donations at the Streator Post Office.
Everything collected stays local, helping the Streatorland Food Pantry meet the needs of community members. The Streator Post Office highlighted that letter carriers see first-hand the impact of hunger in their neighborhoods.
The timing of this spring food drive is crucial. Many food banks run low on supplies after the holiday season. By spring, these pantries often find their shelves bare, especially when school meal programs aren’t available to help children during the summer months.
Nationwide, this drive has gathered over 1.9 billion pounds of food since it began. Alarmingly, more than 44 million Americans struggle with food insecurity—13 million of whom are children, and nearly 5.5 million are seniors over 60.
