Join Us Today for the Fill-A-Cruiser Food Drive: Make a Difference in Your Community!

LEWISTOWN — The Lewistown Police Department is lighting the way to help local families with its Fill-a-Cruiser For Hunger Food Drive. This annual event aims to bring holiday cheer to those in need by collecting food donations.

Police Chief David Clemens partners with the Kiwanis Club to make this drive a success. “It’s been successful every year,” he shares. “People are always generous, and we truly appreciate their support.”

Today, you can drop off non-perishable food items or money at the Giant Food Store on 200 S. Dorcas St. Donations will benefit the LUMINA Center and Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, both vital resources in Lewistown.

Clemens has been involved in this event for nearly a decade. He describes it as a great way for the community to come together and support those less fortunate.

Shoppers at Giant Food are encouraged to grab some extra items from their shopping list to donate. The goal is to fill a police cruiser with essential items. In past years, the community has filled as many as four cruisers.

“Last year, we filled at least three,” Clemens recalls. The continued generosity of the community makes a significant impact each December.

Sherri Bickert, executive director of the LUMINA Center, emphasizes the importance of this event, calling it “the biggest donation we receive.” The collected items help fill Power Packs for local elementary students and support community meals.

Josie Baughman, a member of the Kiwanis Club, enjoys the hands-on service aspect of these events. “It’s a great opportunity to assist the Lewistown Police Department while stocking the pantries at Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard,” she notes. “Many families rely on these resources, especially during the holiday season.”

Statistics show that food insecurity affects 10.5% of households in the U.S. A report from Feeding America indicates that this number may rise during the winter months, making drives like Fill-a-Cruiser even more crucial. As community needs grow, local efforts become essential to lend a helping hand.
