On this week’s episode of “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart had an unexpected moment when he cut his hand while smashing a coffee mug on his desk. This was his reaction to what he saw as mismanagement of federal pharmaceutical subsidies by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.

Stewart highlighted a past clip of President Joe Biden, who celebrated a deal to lower the prices of ten common drugs. Stewart, playing the part of someone working at DOGE, found this celebration to be laughable.

“We give billions to these companies, and they let us negotiate the price of ten drugs?” he asked, clearly frustrated. “Ten? That’s ridiculous! Shouldn’t we be negotiating for all the drugs? We’ve already paid for them with our taxes!”

After making his point, Stewart slammed the mug down, shattering it. He quickly pulled his hand away, realizing he had cut himself, and jokingly said he might need to see a doctor.

Earlier in the show, he had a bit of fun pretending to be an accountant, counting up all the government money that could be saved instead of targeting federal jobs. He mentioned various subsidies, such as the $3 billion given to profitable oil and gas companies and the $1.3 billion from hedge fund tax loopholes. He even brought up the $2 trillion spent on ineffective fighter jets, playfully questioning why we’d invest in obsolete technology.

Stewart’s satirical take was straight to the point, and he used humor to underscore real issues with government spending and policy.
