Mitchell, now based in Los Angeles, reflected on her life changes since suffering a brain aneurysm a decade ago. “It oddly changed my life for the better,” she shared. The experience led her to quit smoking and shifted her life from living with men to being surrounded by supportive women.
Prime Minister Carney honored Mitchell too, noting, “During a career spanning six decades, Joni drew a map of Canada.” The night was filled with pride for Canadian talent, with host Mae Martin expressing warmth for returning home after touring in the U.S. She said returning felt like meeting old friends after a toxic relationship.
Martin, known for her Netflix series Wayward, playfully pitched a video cover for Nelly Furtado’s hit “Promiscuous,” imagining a version called “Promiscuous They/Them.”
At the Junos, all-women rock band The Beaches won best group after a past win in 2024 and 2025. Breakthrough artist Cameron Whitcomb shared a powerful message about sobriety after his win for his debut album’s themes of addiction.
Other winners included Daniel Caesar for “Son of Spergy,” inspired by his father, and rapper BBNO$, who took home the Juno Fan Choice Award. Tate McCrae made headlines for her wins, including album of the year for So Close to What, even though she did not attend.
A touching moment occurred when Nelly Furtado was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame with a heartfelt video tribute from Drake. She expressed pride in being a Canadian artist and emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian talent.
The ceremony also recognized Raquel McIntosh from Adelaide Hoodless Elementary as MusiCounts Teacher of the Year, highlighting the significance of music education.
