Officials from Jordan’s Ministries of Water and Irrigation and Environment met with a German delegation to discuss ways to tackle climate change’s impact on water resources in Jordan. Dr. Jihad Al-Mahamid, Secretary General of the Ministry of Water, and Dr. Omar Arabiyat from the Ministry of Environment led the talks.
The discussions highlighted significant challenges like drought, unpredictable rainfall, and the increasing strain on Jordan’s already limited water supply. Jordanian officials stressed the need for innovative solutions and sought Germany’s expertise in effective water management and reducing water loss.
One major project mentioned was the National Water Carrier Project. This initiative aims to provide around 300 million cubic meters of water each year, significantly boosting the country’s water security.
Both sides agreed on the importance of working together across various sectors to protect the environment. They pointed out that environmental sustainability is essential to managing water resources, especially as climate pressures intensify in the region.
The German team reaffirmed their commitment to supporting Jordan with technical and institutional help, underscoring Jordan’s key role in global environmental initiatives. This cooperation comes at a critical time, as data shows that nearly 60% of Jordan’s water supply comes from underground aquifers, which are depleting rapidly due to climate change and population growth.
Jordan’s situation mirrors other countries facing water challenges, reinforcing a global urgency for sustainable water practices. As discussions continue, many experts believe that international collaboration will be crucial in facing these pressing issues.
