Jordan Hicks, Super Bowl LII Champ with the Eagles, Announces Retirement from NFL: A Look Back at His Legendary Career

Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jordan Hicks recently announced his retirement from the NFL. While he last played for the Eagles in 2018, he played a key role in their first Super Bowl victory in 2017, even though an injury cut his season short.

Hicks struggled with injuries during his time in Philadelphia, which ultimately led to his departure in free agency. However, when healthy, he showed flashes of brilliance. Selected in the third round of the 2015 draft, he earned some attention as a potential Defensive Rookie of the Year. Analysts even called him the Eagles’ “secret superstar” after a strong 2016 season.

Hicks was particularly tough against the Dallas Cowboys, a rivalry that has deep roots in his college days at Texas. He notably affected Tony Romo’s game with a decisive strip-sack in 2015, and memorably scored his only career touchdown with a pick-six in an overtime game against Dallas. In fact, Hicks recorded four of his 13 career interceptions against the Cowboys.

After leaving Philadelphia, Hicks signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2019, where he had a much healthier stretch. He missed no games until the 2023 season, during his time with the Minnesota Vikings. In 2024, he rejoined former Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz with the Cleveland Browns.

In total, Hicks started 134 games out of 138 during his ten-year career, earning around $44.6 million, a fitting amount for someone known for his prowess against the Cowboys.

Reflecting on his presence at press conferences, Hicks was known for his honesty and insight, making him a fan favorite. Although he didn’t have a long-lasting career in Philadelphia, he will be remembered fondly by Eagles fans.

As Hicks steps into retirement, fewer players from the Super Bowl LII squad remain in the NFL today. Interestingly, a few former Eagles players are still free agents who might catch on with a team this season, including WR Nelson Agholor and DB Jalen Mills.
