Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for directing “The Book of Life,” has decided to withdraw from a planned AI-generated series called “Punky Duck” for Amazon MGM Studios. This change comes after intense backlash from fans regarding his use of AI tools in animation.
He made this announcement during the AI on the Lot conference in Los Angeles, where he mentioned that his series was one of three greenlit as part of a new AI pilot program. Gutierrez, who has previously criticized AI in animation, faced heavy criticism online.
In a heartfelt post on X (formerly Twitter), he stated, “I have decided to drop out of the AI program at Amazon. I will not be making a Punky Duck series. Actions speak louder than words.” He expressed regret for upsetting his fans and committed to doing better in the future.
Just days prior, he had openly discussed the backlash he received, even mentioning threats to himself and his family. Yet, he was determined to understand public sentiment. He acknowledged the concerns about using AI and thanked those who offered constructive criticism.
Gutierrez described AI’s animation process as a bit overwhelming. He compared it to having a baby right after conception, noting how quickly he could bring ideas to life. “I’m used to waiting two years for a pilot,” he explained. “Now, making something fast feels rebellious and exciting.”
“Punky Duck” was part of Amazon’s GenAI Creators’ Fund, designed to give animators access to AI tools. Alongside Gutierrez’s project, the fund also included “Love, Diana: Music Hunters” by former Nickelodeon executive Albie Hecht and “Cupcake & Friends” from BuzzFeed Studios. The latter project also faced backlash when the creator of a popular character accused BuzzFeed of using her work without consent.
In response to the controversy, a BuzzFeed representative stated that the creator had declined to participate in the project, respecting her choice while asserting the rights they held over the character.
Gutierrez’s “Punky Duck” featured a punk rock duck and his feline sidekick navigating chaotic adventures in an exaggerated version of Los Angeles. The series promised humor and wild escapades, although much of the reaction focused on Gutierrez’s past statements against AI.
In 2024, he warned that relying on AI could threaten new animators’ futures, claiming it might prevent a generation from breaking into the industry. His work also includes “El Tigre” for Nickelodeon and “Maya and the Three” for Netflix.
The conversation about AI in animation continues as many in the industry grapple with technology’s role in creativity.
