Jose Altuve is set to take on a new role this season as he transitions to left field for the Houston Astros. Manager Joe Espada confirmed that Altuve will start most of his games in this position, although he noted that plans may change as the season unfolds.
During spring training, Altuve has primarily played in left, starting ten games there compared to one game at second base. His performance has had its ups and downs—he’s made three errors and dropped a few easy fly balls in recent games. Altuve admitted that he’s been rushing his throws, especially when trying to get the ball home. However, he’s optimistic about improving. “I’ve been in tough situations before, and I’ve overcome that,” he said, assuring fans he’s working hard to succeed in left field.
This will be Altuve’s first time starting in a major league game at any position other than second base. He might switch back to second base occasionally when Yordan Alvarez plays in the outfield, a move that Espada hopes will keep Alvarez as a designated hitter more often.
In the mix for the corner outfield position is prospect Cam Smith. Acquired in the Kyle Tucker trade, Smith is making a strong impression this spring with an impressive batting average of .419 and an OPS near 1.400 over 13 games. He hit his fourth home run recently, showcasing his power at the plate. The Astros have also been giving him time in right field, in addition to his natural position of third base. This could be a strategic move, as Isaac Paredes is expected to handle most of the third base duties.
Smith’s rise could impact current players like Chas McCormick, who might see less playing time if Smith secures a spot in the outfield. McCormick struggled last season and might need to bounce back to maintain his role.
