Joshua Driver Faces Charges After Tragic Fatal Crash: What You Need to Know

The driver involved in the tragic crash that injured boxer Anthony Joshua and claimed two lives has been charged with reckless and dangerous driving, according to Nigerian police. Adenyi Mobalaji Kayode, 46, was behind the wheel of a Lexus SUV when it collided with a stationary truck on the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Both Joshua and Kayode sustained minor injuries. Unfortunately, Sina Ghami, Joshua’s strength and conditioning coach, and trainer Latif Ayodele lost their lives in the accident.

The Ogun State Police recently announced that Kayode has been charged with causing death through reckless driving and driving without a valid license. He is also facing charges related to causing bodily harm and property damage. While he was granted bail of 5 million naira (around $3,500), he remains in custody until he fulfills the bail conditions.

Joshua, a two-time world heavyweight champion, has been recovering and was discharged from the hospital. He visited a funeral home to pay respects to his late team members shortly after the incident. Joshua has deep ties to Nigeria, particularly in Sagamu, a town near the crash site.

This incident raises concerns about road safety and traffic regulations in Nigeria. According to a 2020 report from the National Bureau of Statistics, over 11,000 road traffic accidents occur annually, with many resulting in fatalities. Experts believe that stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better driver education could significantly reduce these numbers.

Public sentiment on social media has reacted strongly, with many expressing condolences and calling for improved safety measures on roads. The loss of Ghami and Ayodele has touched many within the boxing community, highlighting the real dangers athletes face even outside the ring.

Joshua had recently celebrated a victory over Jake Paul on December 19, turning the focus on his boxing prowess. Now, this tragic event brings a somber note to his return to Nigeria, where he has strong familial roots and support.
