Judge Blocks Beto O’Rourke’s PAC from Supporting Texas Democrats Amid Redistricting Battle

A Texas judge has put a stop to Beto O’Rourke and his political action committee from funding Democratic lawmakers who left the state to block a Republican-backed redistricting plan. This plan could add five more Republican seats in Congress.

The temporary restraining order is a win for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who took legal action against O’Rourke’s PAC, Powered by People. The order bans the committee from covering travel, lodging, or food expenses for the Texas legislators currently away in states like Illinois and California. The court will review the order in two weeks.

Paxton claims that O’Rourke’s group misled donors and used funds for personal expenses, such as private jets and luxury hotels. He stated, “The Beto Bribe buyouts that were bankrolling the runaway Democrats have been officially stopped.” He believes O’Rourke’s actions could undermine Texas’ political process.

In response, O’Rourke filed a countersuit. He accused Paxton of trying to suppress voices that challenge his authority while attacking one of the biggest voter registration groups in the country. O’Rourke highlighted his organization’s efforts during crises, like the 2021 winter storm, where volunteers helped over a million Texans in need.

Despite the legal challenges, O’Rourke is determined to continue his activism and announced plans to speak at an upcoming rally. “I’m not going anywhere,” he asserted.

Meanwhile, Paxton filed another lawsuit against 13 Democratic lawmakers, asking the Texas Supreme Court to declare their seats vacant for leaving the state during a special legislative session.
