Federal and state officials in Florida must clarify who has the legal authority to detain individuals at the newly built immigration facility known as “Alligator Alcatraz.” A federal judge, Rodolfo Ruiz, has ordered that all agreements and contracts regarding the facility be presented by Thursday.
This detention site, erected just over a month ago in the Everglades, has raised significant concerns among immigration attorneys. They argue that the constitutional rights of detainees are being ignored. Many detainees cannot meet with their lawyers, are held without charges, and bond hearings have been canceled.
Since its opening in July, the authority of the facility has been unclear. However, attorneys representing the detainees requested broader access to information regarding who oversees removal proceedings and the number of staff at the center.
This lawsuit is not the only challenge faced by “Alligator Alcatraz.” Environmental organizations have also filed a suit, claiming the facility was developed without adhering to state and federal environmental laws. A hearing on this matter is scheduled for Wednesday.
In a related development, the Archdiocese of Miami conducted its first Mass at the detention center after negotiations for pastoral care services. Archbishop Thomas Wenski expressed gratitude for this opportunity, emphasizing the importance of providing spiritual support to those detained.
