A judge recently challenged the Trump administration’s defense in a case involving immigration enforcement. U.S. District Judge Sara L. Ellis was surprised to hear Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino express excitement about daily check-ins in court, just hours before government lawyers argued that these sessions would disrupt operations.
Judge Ellis mandated that Bovino report to her at 6 p.m. daily, following concerns over heavy-handed tactics by his team. In a subsequent court filing, administration lawyers claimed this requirement would cause “irreparable harm” to immigration enforcement.
However, during a Fox News interview that day, Bovino told host Harris Faulkner that he looked forward to these check-ins. He said, “If [the judge] wants to meet with me every day, I look forward to meeting with her.” This statement directly contradicted the government’s position and left Judge Ellis stunned. She pointed out that Bovino’s own words undermined the arguments presented by the Department of Justice.
Ellis noted that she was taken aback by the discrepancy, emphasizing that Bovino had indicated he was excited to come to court and that it wouldn’t disrupt his work. “The government’s position… was directly contradicted by Mr. Bovino,” she remarked.
Bovino is currently under scrutiny as he leads “Operation Midway Blitz” in Illinois. Recently, he faced accusations of using excessive force, including deploying tear gas on protesters, contributing to public controversy over his tactics. Critics describe his approach as part of a broader trend of aggressive immigration enforcement under the current administration.
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has voiced concerns, asking Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to pause operations around Halloween, particularly after clashes resulted in serious injuries. However, Noem refused and plans to increase the number of officers on the ground.
In 2022, a survey indicated that only 27% of Americans supported aggressive immigration enforcement methods, highlighting growing public concern about tactics like those employed under Bovino’s command.
