A federal judge has ruled that the freeze of $2.2 billion in grant funds for Harvard University was illegal. This decision comes after the Trump administration halted the funding over concerns about antisemitism on campus. The judge, Allison Burroughs, agreed with Harvard’s claim that the suspension was a retaliatory move because the university refused to comply with demands that threatened its First Amendment rights.
The freeze started on April 14, right after Harvard rejected calls to end its diversity and inclusion programs. These demands also suggested screening international students for potential biases. In a letter from April, the administration tied funding to ten specific demands, only one of which was related to antisemitism. The other six focused on ideological and educational matters, such as who can lead at the university and what can be taught.
Harvard President Alan Garber responded to the freeze by emphasizing that no government, regardless of its political stance, should dictate how private universities operate.
