A federal judge recently made a partial ruling in the ongoing legal clash between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni, her co-star and director in “It Ends With Us.” While some of Lively’s requests for phone records were granted, others were dismissed as too invasive for the case.
Lively’s team wanted call and text logs from Baldoni, his PR staff, and employees of Wayfarer Studios, covering the period from December 1, 2022, to now. However, Judge Lewis Liman noted that even without the content of those messages, the records could reveal personal information about Baldoni’s contacts with doctors and others.
Baldoni’s attorney, Bryan Freedman, expressed satisfaction with the ruling, stating it protected his client’s privacy. He characterized Lively’s attempts to gather this information as an unnecessary invasion, aimed at supporting their claims that had already been discredited, particularly after the New York Times reported on the situation.
Still, Lively did gain some ground. The judge allowed her to refine her requests for phone records and indicated that Baldoni hadn’t justified why she couldn’t seek information from those not directly involved in the lawsuit. Judge Liman emphasized that while Baldoni and his team could claim privacy over their own records, they couldn’t extend that claim to communications from non-parties.
The dispute between Lively and Baldoni has turned into one of Hollywood’s most public legal battles. Lively has accused Baldoni of sexual harassment on set and claims that he retaliated by plotting a public smear campaign against her. Meanwhile, Baldoni counters that Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, are making false allegations to damage his career. He has even filed a lawsuit against the New York Times for their reporting on the allegations.
