Edelman took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his frustration with a simple “SMH,” which stands for “shaking my head.” It’s a clear signal of his disbelief that Belichick, a coach with six Super Bowl titles, wasn’t chosen on his first attempt.
Belichick’s success is remarkable. He won six championships as head coach of the Patriots and two more as an assistant with the New York Giants. Edelman had his own stellar career, playing 11 seasons in New England and winning three Super Bowls during that time.
The Patriots drafted Edelman in the seventh round in 2009. Interestingly, before he became a standout wide receiver, he was a quarterback at Kent State. Belichick and his coaching staff saw potential in Edelman’s versatility, which helped kick-start his NFL journey.

According to a recent survey by the Sports Business Journal, about 70% of fans believe that playoff success and championships should weigh heavily in these decisions. Despite this, Belichick faced stiff competition in this year’s ballot.
Eventually, many believe Belichick will get his due. NFL historians often point out that even iconic figures like Joe Montana and Steve Young didn’t make it in on their first tries. Time usually gives a clearer picture of a coach’s legacy.
