Steelers Practice Recap: Weather and Competition

LATROBE, Pa. – Mike Tomlin, the head coach of the Steelers, can shape practices, but he can’t control Mother Nature. During Friday’s practice at Saint Vincent College, both elements were at play.

After warm-ups, the Steelers kicked off their first round of 7-Shots drills.

Early on, quarterback Aaron Rodgers fumbled a hard snap from Zach Frazier. This mishap usually means a win for the defense, but the drill continued. On the next play, Rodgers redeemed himself with a precise throw to DK Metcalf, who caught it easily for a touchdown. However, a back-shoulder attempt to Metcalf later fell incomplete.

Mason Rudolph took over, connecting on a slant to WR Scotty Miller for a quick touchdown after an earlier pass went incomplete under tight coverage from safety Juan Thornhill. Rookie Will Howard also got a chance, throwing one incomplete pass but following it with a touchdown to TE JJ Galbreath.

In total, the results showed a 4-3 win for the defense. Yet, Tomlin decided to redo the first play. When the top offensive and defensive squads took the field again, Rodgers’ snap was perfect. He quickly threw a well-placed pass to TE Pat Freiermuth for another touchdown, flipping the score to 4-3 in favor of the offense.

Towards the end of practice, the session was disrupted by lightning, forcing players and fans to clear the area. After a suspenseful wait, practice was canceled. Tomlin expressed his disappointment but emphasized the importance of safety and learning to deal with unexpected challenges.

“Football is full of surprises,” he said, recalling a delay they faced last year against the Cowboys.

In a reflective moment, Rodgers demonstrated adaptability. After a shaky start with an interception earlier in camp, he showcased his skill by varying his arm angle to complete two difficult passes while under pressure. His ability to adjust is crucial for success.

The Steelers also made a roster move, signing veteran safety Chuck Clark and waiving DT Domenique Davis. Clark, 30, brings a wealth of experience with six seasons at the Ravens. Despite missing the entire 2023 season due to a torn ACL, he played the following year with the Jets, racking up solid statistics.

Tomlin spoke highly of Clark, noting that he’s a diligent worker and strong communicator, qualities that can enhance team dynamics. The fact that Clark played for a division rival didn’t concern him.

“It’s more about how well I know him than who he played for,” Tomlin said. “In today’s game, player movement is common.”

As for injuries, Tomlin mentioned no new developments. Players expected to return soon were still day-to-day, but he remained hopeful.

This practice session underlines the blend of competition and unpredictability in the NFL. The Steelers are gearing up for their season, ready to adapt and overcome whatever challenges come their way.
