A 33-year-old police volunteer named Sanjoy Roy has been found guilty of raping and murdering a junior doctor in Kolkata last year. The court’s decision came on Saturday, with the judge confirming, “Your guilt is proved.” His sentencing is expected on Monday and could lead to life imprisonment or even the death penalty.

Judge Anirban Das noted that the evidence against Roy was circumstantial but strong enough to merit the serious charges. India’s federal police labeled this crime as “the rarest of the rare” and have advocated for the death penalty.

Despite the ruling, Roy maintains his innocence. He claimed last November that he was wrongly accused and repeated this assertion in court, stating, “I have not done this.” His trial was notably expedited through India’s typically slow legal process, wrapping up merely a week ago.

The victim’s parents expressed their doubts about the investigation, suggesting that someone else might have been involved. Her father remarked, “Our daughter could not have met such a horrific end by a single man. We will remain in pain and agony until all the culprits are punished.”

This case has sparked significant protests from doctors and the community. Outside the courthouse, doctors rallied, chanting in support of the victim. Dr. Aniket Mahato, representing junior doctors, stated that demonstrations would persist “until justice is done.”

The body of the young doctor was discovered in a classroom at the R G Kar Medical College and Hospital last August, highlighting the alarming issue of violence against women in India. This tragic event has led to increased calls for better security measures in government hospitals, with many citizens joining protests to advocate for safer conditions.
