Jorge Rueda Landeros was found guilty on Thursday of murdering Sue Marcum, an accounting professor at American University, back in 2010. After an eight-day trial, the jury delivered their verdict.
At 55, Rueda Landeros was Marcum’s Spanish and yoga instructor. There are questions about whether they had a romantic relationship since they shared a joint investment account. He was also the sole beneficiary of a $500,000 life insurance policy Marcum had taken out. According to prosecutors, over two years, Marcum lost $312,000 while Rueda Landeros profited by $252,000.
Marcum, who was 52, was discovered dead in her Bethesda home on October 25, 2010. Prosecutors stated Rueda Landeros attacked her during a confrontation, then tried to make it look like a burglary. The defense claimed it was a botched robbery.
The medical examiners determined her death was due to blunt force trauma and asphyxiation. After the incident, Rueda Landeros fled to Mexico, where he held dual citizenship, and worked as a yoga teacher under the name Leon Ferrara. He evaded capture for 12 years and was listed on the FBI’s “Most Wanted List.”
In December 2022, he was arrested in Juarez, Mexico, and extradited back to the U.S. Despite maintaining his innocence, DNA evidence linked him to the crime scene.
Before the trial began, the judge ruled that jurors would not learn he had been on the FBI’s Most Wanted List for over a decade. Montgomery County prosecutors painted Rueda Landeros as a manipulative figure who used Marcum for her money; when her funds dried up, he killed her.
He now faces a sentence of up to 30 years for second-degree murder. His sentencing is scheduled for February 6.
