Jeremiah Johnson is the new defensive backs coach for Kansas State University. With 24 years of coaching experience, including 13 years as a coordinator, he’s ready to make an impact.
Before joining Kansas State, Johnson was the defensive coordinator at Coastal Carolina. He also stepped in as the interim head coach for their recent Independence Bowl game against Louisiana Tech.
“I couldn’t refuse when Coach Collin Klein invited me to join his team,” Johnson said. The two worked together in 2016 at Northern Iowa. “I’m eager to help him realize his vision for this program. Plus, returning home to Kansas adds to my excitement.”
This past season at Coastal, Johnson helped the team achieve its sixth consecutive bowl game. They ranked highly in various defensive categories, including fourth in converting fourth downs (40% success) and 31st in fumble recoveries, with standout player Xamarion Gordon ranking second nationally in fumble recoveries.
During his time at Louisiana Tech in 2024, Johnson’s defense was impressive, ranking 12th in total defense. They limited opponents to 308.4 yards per game. This improvement was a substantial jump from the previous season, showcasing his ability to transform defenses effectively.
At Northern Iowa, Johnson’s coaching led to 32 players earning All-Missouri Valley Football Conference honors and notable accolades such as the Buck Buchanan Award. Under his guidance, defenses consistently ranked in the top 10 nationally in key statistical categories, making him a recognized figure in college football coaching.
Johnson has deep roots in Kansas, as he grew up in Scandia and studied at the University of Kansas. After earning his degree in sports science, he pursued a master’s in athletic administration from Loras College.
His family, including his wife Nicki, son Lane, and daughter Drew, are excited about this next chapter. Johnson’s return to Kansas State marks a significant moment not just in his career, but also for his family, as they join the Wildcat community.
This hiring comes at a time when K-State is focusing on building a strong coaching staff. With Johnson’s track record in defense and recruitment, expectations are high for the upcoming season.
As college football continues to evolve, effective coaching and strong defenses are essential. Johnson’s skills will play a vital role in shaping K-State’s future on the field.
