Nazem Kadri is heading back to the Colorado Avalanche after being traded by the Calgary Flames. This move is significant for both teams.
The Flames received a few key assets in return: forward Victor Olofsson, unsigned prospect Maxmilian Curran, and two conditional draft picks—a first-round pick in 2028 and a second-round pick in 2027. Colorado also got a fourth-round pick in 2027.
“I’m super excited,” Kadri shared with TSN. “This was one of my top choices. I can’t wait to get started.”
At 35, Kadri has been having a strong season with 41 points (12 goals and 29 assists) over 61 games. He is in the fourth year of a seven-year contract worth $49 million, and Calgary has agreed to retain 20% of his remaining salary.
Drafted 7th overall by the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2009, Kadri has accumulated 751 points (319 goals, 432 assists) over his career, playing for the Maple Leafs, Avalanche, and Flames. His playoff experience is notable too, with 44 points (19 goals, 25 assists) in just 52 games, including a Stanley Cup win with the Avalanche in 2022.
Flames general manager Craig Conroy spoke highly of Kadri, emphasizing his competitive spirit and desire to win. “He’s a player who genuinely wants another chance,” Conroy explained. As for Kadri, he reflected on the ups and downs of trades, saying, “It’s a lot of flip-flopping. These deals aren’t easy, but I’m thrilled this worked out.”
Currently, Colorado leads the NHL with a record of 41 wins, 10 losses, and 9 overtime losses, sitting six points ahead of the Dallas Stars in the Central Division. Their upcoming game against the Stars on Friday is set to be a pivotal matchup.
Kadri expressed gratitude to the Flames for how they managed his trade situation. “They treated me well,” he said, highlighting the Flames’ commitment to making this transition smooth. This trade marks a new chapter for him, and he looks forward to reconnecting with former teammates in Colorado.
On the other side, the Flames are struggling. With a record of 24 wins, 30 losses, and 7 overtime losses, they sit at the bottom of the Western Conference, 12 points away from the playoff spot currently held by the Seattle Kraken. Conroy is focused on rebuilding, saying, “We’re trying to gather assets and head in the right direction as quickly as possible.”
This trade reflects both a promising future for Kadri and a critical shift for the Flames as they reassess their strategy moving forward.
