A group of scientists, geologists, and community organizations recently praised the Kaduna State Government for bringing back a monthly environmental cleanup. This announcement came during a gathering in August at the Media Training and Research Centre in Kaduna. The event, part of the Climate Media Hangout, focused on reviewing the state’s environmental policies and challenges.
The reintroduction of this sanitation exercise, set to start at the end of September 2025, marks a key step towards a cleaner, greener Kaduna. Participants in the meeting emphasized the importance of government commitment to environmental health. Yahaya Mohammed, the head of the Safety Awareness and Environmental Support Initiative (SAESI), confirmed that the cleanup will take place on the last Saturday of every month and last for three hours. Residents are encouraged to clean their surroundings during this time and remain at home.
Dr. Abubakar Shafiu, a health researcher, highlighted that many health issues stem from poor waste management and neglecting the environment. This reflects a growing understanding that a healthy environment leads to better public health. Data reveals an alarming connection: improper waste disposal is linked to diseases like malaria, typhoid, and cholera.
