BYU’s football team has kicked off its spring practices for 2026. The Cougars had their first of 15 practices on Friday, and Coach Kalani Sitake is optimistic.
“It was a beautiful day. Being outside was great, and I’m excited about the team,” Sitake shared with reporters. He added, “We’re not in game shape yet, but we don’t need to be right now. By fall camp, we will be. The players are definitely stronger, and we’ll keep working to improve.”

Regarding the recent departure of receiver Parker Kingston, Sitake reassured fans, “The team is fine. We have a strong culture here.” This sense of unity is crucial, especially during transitions.
### Goals for Spring Practices
Sitake laid out clear goals: “We want to be a better team by the end of these 15 practices.” He emphasized the importance of helping new players adapt to the team’s strategies so they can compete effectively.
### Strength in Positions
Talking about the wide receiver group, Sitake noted, “We’ve retained a lot of talent and brought in some promising new players. The tight ends, running backs, and offensive line all look strong as well.” This depth could prove vital as the season progresses.
### New Transfers
BYU recently added tight ends Walker Lyons and Roger Saleapaga. Sitake mentioned, “We knew them from high school, and they’re just as athletic and strong as we expected.” Although they aren’t in pads yet, their skills in blocking and route-running should shine when they start full practices.
### Offensive Line Upgrades
Regarding the offensive line, Sitake remarked, “We’ll play the best five linemen. Last year we had a good rotation, and I trust our coaches to get them ready.” The players added from the transfer portal have been familiar faces, making the transition smoother.

This season brings higher expectations for the Cougars. “We stay humble and hungry,” Sitake said. Each year, the team adapts, but strong leadership remains constant.

On the topic of injuries, Sitake brought up LJ Martin, saying, “He looks awesome and is on track to recover on time.” He praised Martin’s leadership and how he continues growing as a player.

Finally, Sitake spoke about the importance of relationships with players, especially those previously recruited by BYU. He stated, “We try to connect with recruits and their families.
