Job-seekers often feel frustrated with lengthy hiring processes. High-profile leaders like Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Vice President Kamala Harris have faced these challenges too. Pichai had to go through nine interviews to secure a role at Google, including tackling tricky questions. Harris, during her vetting for vice president, was grilled for nine hours by a lawyer digging into her taxes, professional history, and more.
Harris has an impressive resume. She’s been the district attorney of San Francisco, California’s attorney general, and a U.S. senator. Yet, she emphasizes that the selection process isn’t just about credentials. It’s also about chemistry. “By the time you get to the final interview, it’s usually down to a few candidates,” she explains. “It’s about trust and whether you can work together.”
Winning a high-stakes position can come with unexpected emotional downsides. Harris described experiencing “gold medal depression,” a feeling of emptiness that can follow major accomplishments, whether winning or losing. This was particularly evident after her 2024 presidential campaign against Donald Trump. The pressure of the campaign, followed by the sudden stop when she lost, left her feeling disoriented.
“A big adrenaline rush continues until the event is over, creating a void once it ends,” Harris noted, comparing this sensation to the emptiness felt by CEOs after an IPO. It’s a battle many high achievers struggle with.
Studies suggest that around 30% of people in high-stress jobs experience similar feelings after major achievements, signaling a common, if surprising, challenge in the quest for success.
