Kano State has made a remarkable leap in Nigeria’s 2025 Sub-national Climate Governance Performance Ranking. It jumped from 35th place last year to an impressive 4th this year. This is one of the biggest improvements any state has seen in Nigeria’s climate governance.
A statement from the governor’s spokesman, Sanusi Bature Dawakin, credited this achievement to the leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf. He has prioritized environmental sustainability and climate resilience as key parts of his administration’s goals. This focus has led to significant reforms aimed at better protecting the environment.
Some of the initiatives include the Kano State Climate Change Policy, the introduction of renewable energy in government facilities, and projects to enhance urban greenery through the Urban Renewal Programme. Additionally, the state has undertaken extensive reforestation and erosion control efforts.
At an event in Abuja, Dr. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, represented Governor Yusuf. He highlighted that this recognition reflects Kano’s commitment to responsible environmental management and sustainable development.
During the event, Samantha Harrison, the First Secretary for Climate Diplomacy at the British High Commission, presented a certificate to the Kano State Government. This certificate recognizes the state’s significant progress in climate governance.
Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the Minister of Environment and the Federal Ministry for their support in enhancing climate governance. This partnership is crucial, as effective climate action often requires collaboration between different levels of government. The public reaction to these changes has been positive, with many citizens expressing hope for a greener future for Kano and Nigeria as a whole.
This leap in ranking also mirrors a larger global trend. According to the Global Climate Risk Index, nations that prioritize climate policies and sustainability are better positioned to handle environmental challenges. Kano’s advancements could serve as a model for other states looking to improve their climate actions.
In summary, Kano State’s rise in climate governance is not just a statistic; it represents hope, commitment, and a vision for a sustainable future. As more states follow suit, Nigeria’s battle against climate change may gain a much-needed boost.
