Kano Launches Exciting New Phase of Climate Education: Join the Movement for a Greener Future!

The Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project has kicked off the second phase of its Climate Change Education (CCE) initiative in Kano State, Nigeria. This campaign took place at the Girls Science and Technical College and is part of the “Catch Them Young” program. The goal is to raise a new generation of environmental advocates.

Maryam Abdulkadir, the Communication Officer for Kano-ACReSAL, shared that the initiative aims to arm students with the knowledge and skills to confront climate-related issues from a young age. Dr. Abdulhamid Bala, the Acting Project Coordinator, highlighted the urgent need for action to address the serious challenge that climate change presents to our environment.

Dr. Bala encouraged students to become environmental ambassadors in their communities. He also connected these efforts to the state government’s climate action plan under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, which includes a shift toward solar energy and initiatives like the solarization of government buildings.

Environmental experts from various academic institutions led engaging sessions with students, discussing the causes and effects of climate change. Among the facilitators were Dr. Ummi Khaltum Muhammad from Bayero University Kano and Prof. Muhammad Alhaji from Kano University of Science and Technology (KUST).

To deepen climate education, an Environmental Club was formed within the school. This club will help spread awareness to both students and the wider community. Additionally, the project distributed 100 improved fruit tree seedlings to the school, which will be cared for by the Climate Change Ambassadors and school staff, aiming to improve local vegetation.

Recent studies show that educational initiatives like this can significantly raise awareness and inspire action against climate issues among youths. An engaging climate change curriculum was found to increase students’ interest in environmental careers by 45%. Initiatives like the one in Kano not only educate but also empower young advocates to make a real difference.

Ultimately, the steps taken in Kano reflect a growing recognition of youth as vital players in the fight against climate change. This project fosters a sense of responsibility and encourages communal participation in creating a sustainable future.
