Kano State has made a significant jump in Nigeria’s 2025 Subnational Climate Governance Performance Ranking, now standing at 4th place. This impressive rise from 35th last year showcases the proactive leadership of Governor Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, who has prioritized environmental sustainability in his administration.
Under Governor Yusuf, Kano has introduced several important reforms. These include a comprehensive Climate Change Policy, initiatives to boost renewable energy in public institutions, and urban greening projects aimed at beautifying the city. Additionally, large-scale efforts for afforestation and controlling erosion are underway.
Dr. Dahiru Hashim, the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, represented the governor during the unveiling of the ranking in Abuja. He highlighted that this ranking reflects the state’s commitment to sustainable development and effective environmental management.
During the event, Samantha Harrison from the British High Commission presented Kano State with a certificate recognizing its achievements in climate governance. Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude for the support from various partners, including the Federal Ministry of Environment and international organizations like the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) and the University of Bristol. These collaborations have been crucial for fostering effective climate policies.
