Karen Huger, a well-known figure from “The Real Housewives of Potomac,” was sentenced this week to two years in prison for driving under the influence. The incident occurred in late 2024, and the Montgomery County court found her guilty on multiple counts related to a crash.
She was ordered to pay $2,900 in fines and taken into custody immediately after the hearing, dressed in a black outfit. Huger is set to be transported to the Montgomery County Correctional Facility.
Her defense attorney, David A. Martella, shared that Huger is relieved that this chapter is over. “She’s happy after completing a recovery process for nearly two months,” he mentioned.
Karen Huger’s troubles began in March 2024 when she lost control of her 2017 Maserati. Reports indicate she crashed over a median while trying to prevent a head-on collision. Huger later expressed that she was emotionally distressed at the time.
The courtroom was filled with supporters, including Huger’s family. Her sister was visibly upset during the hearing. Huger’s attorney highlighted the struggles everyone faces, asking the judge for compassion and noting her client’s remorse. They revealed that she had written a letter of apology to the officers involved in her arrest.
This sentencing happened in the Montgomery County Circuit Court. Interestingly, the proceedings were briefly interrupted when the judge noticed someone live-blogging the case on Reddit, requiring all phones to be turned off.
Karen, often referred to as the “Grande Dame of Potomac,” is a Virginia native and a University of Virginia graduate. She has been a cast member of RHOP since its debut in 2016, which has just released its ninth season.
In a recent development, she was absent from the show’s reunion episode but shared a pre-taped video with her castmates, discussing her journey with alcohol. “I care about my children; I care about my family. They’re so hurt,” she said, focusing on the impact her actions have on her loved ones.
According to her defense team, Huger feels healthier and more positive now than she has in years.
