Katsina Takes Action: Bolstering Healthcare Resilience Amid Climate Challenges – Voice of Nigeria Broadcasting Service

Katsina State in North West Nigeria is taking significant steps to boost its healthcare system in response to climate change. The focus is on building health infrastructure that can withstand environmental challenges and incorporating climate concerns into public health planning.

At a recent training in Kano, Dr. Muawiyah Aliyu, representing the Health Commissioner, emphasized the need for health adaptation due to rising climate variability. He stated, “Diseases that used to be easy to manage are now more complicated because of climate impacts.”

Key Initiatives

The Katsina government is launching several initiatives:

• Building health facilities designed to cope with climate change
• Running community campaigns to raise awareness about climate-related health risks
• Implementing WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) projects in at-risk areas
• Training healthcare workers to integrate climate knowledge into their services
• Installing solar energy systems in health centers to lessen reliance on fossil fuels

Commissioner Funtua noted, “Planning is important, but without funding, action becomes difficult.”

Implementation Framework

The state has set up a three-tier coordination structure to ensure effective implementation:

1. State Council on Climate Change – Chaired by the Governor
2. State Climate Technical Committee – Led by the Commissioner for Environment
3. State Forum on Climate Change – Managed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment

This framework aims to provide direction for integrating climate efforts into health policies.

National Alignment

Hajiya Rukayya Muhammad, from the National Council on Climate Change, emphasized that this initiative aligns with the Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP). She stated, “Our aim is to help states link their adaptation efforts with national priorities.” This integration can enhance climate resilience, especially at the primary healthcare level.

The Role of Human Activity

Dr. Yusuf Gede, a climatologist, pointed out that human practices like deforestation and fossil fuel use are leading contributors to climate change. He advocated for afforestation and community engagement to combat environmental degradation and lower health risks.

Support from the Lafiya Project

The training session received support from the Lafiya Project, a collaborative UK-Nigeria initiative aimed at strengthening healthcare systems. Katsina’s proactive stance reflects a broader recognition across Nigeria that climate change is a serious public health issue requiring immediate and coordinated responses.
