Katsina State is making strides in waste management, thanks to a recent partnership between the state government and Zoomlion Nigeria Limited. This collaboration aims to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainability.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Habiba Abubakar, managing director of Zoomlion. Mohammed Al Amin, the governor’s special adviser on climate change, also participated in the signing. This MoU shows Katsina’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and ensuring a healthier future.

The agreement sets the stage for both solid and liquid waste management improvements. For solid waste, the projects include creating material recovery facilities, mobile loading stations, and a modern sanitary landfill. They also plan to implement a well-organized waste collection system using self-tipping tricycles.

On the liquid waste side, the focus will be on constructing fecal sludge treatment plants and new wastewater facilities. These will adhere to international best practices, ensuring they are effective and safe.

The Katsina State Government will take the lead on regulatory approvals and environmental assessments. Meanwhile, Zoomlion will handle the feasibility studies, provide technology and training, and ensure the projects’ long-term viability.

Governor Radda emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “This partnership represents a bold step toward addressing our waste management issues, creating green jobs for youth, and fostering a cleaner environment for future generations.”

This partnership is not only a significant move for Katsina but also mirrors a growing trend among governments worldwide to foster environmental responsibility. A recent report by the United Nations found that cities across the globe produced about 2 billion tons of waste in 2020, a figure expected to grow.
