KBC Journalist Takes the Helm as KENSJA President: What This Means for Journalism

Judith Akolo has just been elected as the new President of the Kenya Environment Science Journalists Association (KENSJA). This unanimous decision happened during an Annual General Meeting in Nairobi.

With over 20 years in journalism, Akolo has a strong background in environmental and climate change reporting. She is also studying for a Master’s in Climate Change Adaptation at the University of Nairobi.

As she takes the lead, Akolo emphasizes the importance of clear scientific communication. “The public is hungry for well-interpreted data that enables informed decisions,” she stated. She succeeds Duncan Mboya, who served two terms in the role.

The new leadership team includes Verenardo Meeme as Deputy President, Gilbert Nakweya as Secretary General, Nanjinwa Wamuswa as Deputy Secretary, and Samwel Doe Ouma as Treasurer. Lenah Bosibori will assist the treasurer, while Osman Maalim steps in as the Organizing Secretary. Additional committee members are Gilbert Koech, Carol Chebet, Bruhan Mekong, and Jael Opicho.

As the world grapples with climate issues, leaders like Akolo play a crucial role. Recent surveys show that 67% of Kenyans are increasingly concerned about climate change and its impact on their lives. This growing awareness makes the role of journalists in this field even more vital.

To highlight the importance of climate journalism, experts like Dr. Jane Goodall stress that informed public discourse is essential for effective policy-making. Journalists, by presenting scientific data in an understandable way, help communities adapt and respond to climate challenges.

As KENSJA moves forward, the need for accurate reporting and public engagement will only intensify. With Akolo at the helm, there is hope for a brighter future where science and journalism work hand in hand for environmental awareness and action.
