Sir Keir Starmer recently revealed a £1.6 billion missile deal to support Ukraine. This announcement followed a gathering of European leaders in London, where discussions focused on enhancing assistance for Ukraine amid ongoing conflict.
During the summit, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky joined 17 European leaders and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. They explored ways to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine. Starmer emphasized a collective effort, stating that several countries, including France, are ready to commit troops if peace negotiations succeed.
“My support for Ukraine is unwavering,” Starmer said. He feels a strong duty to end Russia’s illegal war and to ensure Ukraine’s sovereignty and security. He highlighted the importance of national security, linking it to economic stability in the UK. The missile deal is expected to enhance Ukraine’s air defense while creating jobs in Northern Ireland.
Starmer is set to discuss his four-step plan with U.S. President Trump. He aims to secure a commitment from the U.S. to back Ukraine’s defense efforts. Starmer believes that with strong U.S. support, they can foster peace on the continent.
The new missile deal will enable Ukraine to acquire over 5,000 lightweight-multirole missiles (LMM), manufactured in Belfast. These missiles aim to defend against Russian drone and missile attacks. Ukrainian forces have been using initial supplies of these LMMs since late last year.
This agreement is expected to create around 200 jobs in Northern Ireland and support an additional 700 jobs across the UK. It represents part of a broader commitment to defense spending, which is projected to rise to 2.5% of national income by 2027 and possibly reach 3% by 2034.
Defence Secretary John Healey highlighted the urgency of this support for Ukraine’s security, stating that it aims to deter future aggression. He reassured that this deal reflects the UK’s steadfast commitment to enhancing military support and fostering job growth at home.
Overall, this missile deal is part of a larger initiative to build long-term partnerships with Ukraine, focusing on restoring and modernizing its defense capabilities. This aligns with previous agreements made in January to provide substantial financial support for military equipment from UK companies. The UK’s defense industry remains dedicated to supporting Ukraine during this ongoing conflict, ensuring both immediate and long-term security needs are met.
