Before this role, Kekalainen was a senior adviser for the team, joining in May. Terry Pegula highlighted his strong qualifications, noting the extensive search that led to bringing Kekalainen onboard. “His experience and drive are exceptional,” said Pegula.
Kekalainen has a solid track record. He previously managed the Columbus Blue Jackets from 2013 to 2024, making history as the first European-born GM in the NHL. Under his leadership, the Blue Jackets made the playoffs five times and achieved a franchise record of 50 wins and 108 points in the 2016-2017 season. They also celebrated their first playoff series win by sweeping the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2019.
Adams had been with the Sabres as GM for six seasons. The team has struggled lately and currently sits eighth in the Atlantic Division with a 14-14-4 record. They haven’t reached the playoffs since 2011. Pegula acknowledged Adams’ contributions, thanking him for his loyalty and dedication.
