Kelowna, Vernon, and Revelstoke Athletes Dazzle at the 2025 Special Olympics: Inspiring Moments and Achievements

Five Okanagan athletes have returned home shining with medals from the 2025 Special Olympics World Winter Games held in Turin, Italy. It’s an exciting achievement for both the athletes and their communities.

Kelowna’s athletes particularly stole the spotlight in cross country skiing. Francis Stanley made headlines, winning three gold medals in the 10K Free Technique, 5K Free Technique, and the 4x1K Relay events. Kelsey Wyse also put in a strong performance, grabbing gold in the 4x1K Relay and securing top spots in other races. Tracey Melesko joined her teammates in glory with a gold for the 4x1K Relay and strong finishes in other events.

Snowshoeing brought great results too. Kelowna’s Tony Wilkinson took home gold in the 4x100m event, while Vernon’s Danielle Pechet earned a bronze in the 400m.

Revelstoke’s Yorke Parkin made waves in Alpine Skiing, clinching three gold medals. His skills shone in the Advanced Giant Slalom, Advanced Super G, and Advanced Slalom events.

“For me, representing my country is everything,” Wilkinson shared, highlighting the pride of competing with Team Canada. He emphasized the life-changing impact of the Special Olympics, describing how it has taught him about healthy living and the joy of sports.

British Columbia had a strong showing at the Games, with 22 athletes contributing to Team Canada’s impressive total of 116 medals: 39 gold, 35 silver, and 42 bronze. Dan Howe, the president and CEO of Special Olympics BC, praised the athletes for their outstanding performances and the inspiration they provided.

The success of these athletes sheds light on the growing awareness and support for individuals with intellectual disabilities. In recent years, participation in the Special Olympics has surged, reflecting a broader societal push towards inclusivity and acceptance. A 2023 report highlighted that the event has expanded its reach, with more than 5 million athletes competing worldwide. This growth is pivotal, allowing athletes to showcase their skills and compete on an international stage.
