A young man with a vision for a greener future recently stood among young trees and fresh soil, realizing that planting had become part of a bigger environmental mission for Kenya.
This young man is Amb. Hillary Kiplagat-Buzeki Nebo, who recently began his role as Kenya’s 15 Billion Trees Campaign Ambassador. He marked his new position by celebrating a significant achievement: the planting of KenGen’s one-millionth tree.
In just ten months, KenGen reached this milestone, showing a growing commitment to environmental restoration, especially in the energy sector. Sustainability is becoming a central part of long-term planning, not just an add-on.
“This milestone shows what can happen when institutions and communities come together for a common environmental goal,” Amb. Buzeki Nebo said. He praised KenGen for its dedication to sustainability and its active role in supporting Kenya’s national afforestation agenda.
He linked this effort to global goals for climate action, emphasizing that sustainability should be part of daily operations for institutions. It’s no longer just an abstract idea but a practical necessity.
But as KenGen celebrated this achievement, attention shifted to what comes next. Planting trees is just a start; ensuring they grow strong is vital. The ambassador stressed the need for high survival rates of trees, better ecological restoration practices, and more sustainable and scientifically guided afforestation efforts.
He also pointed out the importance of working with various stakeholders. Collaborations with the Ministry of Environment, the Energy Ministry, and organizations like the UN Environment Programme and Kenya Forest Service will be key to future successes.
Experts agree. According to a recent report by the Kenya Forest Service, more than 80% of trees planted in past initiatives fail to thrive, highlighting the urgency of proper care and maintenance. This statistic shows that our approach to planting must evolve. Just putting trees in the ground isn’t enough.
