Kentucky Education Groups Respond to SEEK Funding Shortfall: Impact on Schools and Students

Kentucky’s education system is facing a significant challenge. Education Commissioner Robbie Fletcher recently announced a shortfall in the state’s SEEK funds, expected to be around $12 million this school year. This will affect 171 school districts across Kentucky.

Eddie Campbell, president of the Kentucky Education Association, voiced his concerns. “We’ll be advocating strongly on Capitol Hill to ensure this gap is filled,” he said. He hopes lawmakers will consider the $4 billion rainy-day fund when they reconvene on February 4.

There is an opportunity for the state to address this issue. Campbell believes that the funds available can help resolve the funding crisis. However, finding solutions to budget deficits can be tough, especially mid-year, as noted by Nancy Hutchinson, CEO of the Kentucky Education Development Corporation. She explained how challenging it is to make cuts at this stage. Hutchinson added that they will listen to concerns from school districts and support them in budget adjustments.

Since this is a non-budget year, Campbell emphasized the need for a budget adjustment rather than starting from scratch. The per-pupil funding was initially underestimated, leading to the current shortfall. “The focus should always be on improving our public schools,” he stressed.

In response to the situation, House Speaker David Osborne acknowledged that incorrect estimates from the Department of Education contributed to the funding gap. He noted, “We will keep monitoring this situation closely” as they expect to receive final numbers in early March. The legislature remains committed to supporting K-12 education and aims to provide adequate resources for the children of Kentucky.

While Commissioner Fletcher wasn’t available for an interview, a spokesperson expressed eagerness to work with the General Assembly to find solutions for this current funding issue.

As the House of Representatives and Senate prepare to return to Frankfort on February 4, the focus will be on finding a way to address this crucial funding shortfall.
