Kentucky’s Summer Food Program Extended: What This Means for Families and Kids

FRANKFORT, Ky. – The federal government has approved funding to ensure that 450,000 children in Kentucky receive healthy meals this summer. Each eligible child will get a one-time benefit of $120 to buy nutritious food. This support comes through the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer Program.

Starting in 2024, students aged six to 18 who currently receive SNAP, KTAP, or Kinship Care benefits will be automatically enrolled. This also includes kids from schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program.

“Every child should have access to healthy meals all year long,” said Gov. Andy Beshear. “This program is vital for our children’s health.” He emphasized that food is crucial not just for survival but for building strong communities. By extending this program, Kentucky is working to combat hunger and promote a healthier future.
