Kenwood Triumphs Over Lincoln Park’s Fierce Challenge to Secure Top Seed in City Playoffs

In the future, people will remember Chicago basketball players as unique. They are tougher and more resilient. They carry something special that sets them apart. This spirit shines in high-stakes games, like the recent matchup between Kenwood and Lincoln Park.

The game took place in the cramped, noisy gym at Lincoln Park. Fans were so close they could almost touch the players. The atmosphere was electric, but not easy for the athletes. Kenwood sophomore Devin Cleveland experienced this for the first time.

“It was wild,” Cleveland said. “There was no room to move, and I struggled to drive along the baseline.” Despite the challenges, Kenwood triumphed, winning 70-61. This victory earned them the Red Shield conference title and the number one seed in the upcoming Public League playoffs.

“I knew I had to step up,” Cleveland remarked. “My dad told me it was time to shine.” He led the Broncos with 17 points, while senior Amari Edwards contributed 15. Players like Jumir Aguda-Batie and Kingston Watson also made important contributions off the bench.

“I told Jumir to be ready,” Cleveland shared. “I wanted him to just catch the ball and make plays. The first time I saw him, he dunked it!” Cleveland’s trust in his teammates fueled their success throughout the game.

Midway through the third quarter, the game paused for about 15 minutes due to some chaos in the stands, including a fan being ejected. This did not shake Kenwood’s focus. They pushed their lead to 50-40 before Lincoln Park made a fierce comeback.

Chayse Turner ignited the Lions with a steal and dunk, closing the gap to 54-52. Junior Larry Harris then scored consecutive points, putting Lincoln Park ahead 60-58.

But Kenwood’s bench stepped up when it mattered most. Watson scored on a driving layup, and Aguda-Batie’s dunk shifted the momentum back to Kenwood. They held on to secure the win.

Kenwood coach Joseph Mason praised his players’ preparation and resilience, saying, “Even the guys who didn’t play a lot were ready to contribute.” Meanwhile, Harris scored 20 points with six rebounds for Lincoln Park. Kaydin Williams added 19 points, and Turner finished with 10.

Lincoln Park coach Josh Anderson acknowledged Kenwood’s strength, saying, “[Kenwood] is battle-tested. They earned their top rank for a reason. I respect their coaching staff and look forward to future matchups.”
