Kenya is set to host the seventh United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-7) from December 11 to 12, 2025, at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) headquarters in Gigiri, Nairobi. UNEA is the top global decision-making body for environmental issues, where countries come together to shape policies on pressing environmental challenges.
This year’s theme, “Advancing Sustainable Solutions for a Resilient Planet,” reflects the current geopolitical landscape and the urgent need for collaboration. Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of UNEP, noted that the assembly will draw over 55 ministers and approximately 3,500 delegates. Key discussion points will include AI, sustainable mineral management, wildfire prevention, and water cycle issues.
Kenya previously hosted UNEA-6 in February 2023, focusing on solutions to climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. This year, the aim is to strengthen international cooperation to address these interconnected crises collectively.
The event will also feature a Youth Environment Assembly, where young people can voice their concerns and ideas. Kenya’s government, represented by Environment Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa, has committed to making UNEA-7 a success and plans to elevate Africa’s perspective in global discussions.
In addition to serving as a host, Kenya will sponsor three important resolutions on antimicrobial resistance, sustainable AI practices, and the use of sports for environmental change. These resolutions aim to promote actionable steps to tackle pollution and encourage climate resilience.
Recent statistics highlight the urgency of these discussions. According to a global survey by the World Economic Forum, environmental issues are among the top concerns of people worldwide, ranking alongside economic stability and health crises. This shows a growing awareness and demand for robust action in environmental governance.

Platforms like Twitter and Instagram have seen increased discussions around climate action and sustainable practices, showcasing a rising awareness of the importance of these issues.
Kenya’s proactive stance on plastic pollution is also noteworthy. The establishment of the International Science-Policy Panel on Chemicals, Waste, and Pollution (ISP-CWP) underscores the need for solid science-based policy solutions.
